Carnival on St John is heating up and we have vacancies.  The festival is a colorful celebration of Moko JumbiesCaribbean and African culture. Carnival began as a one day event in 1912 while St John was still under the the Danish flag.  It is now a month long celebration that simmers along until the “Village” opens and things really heat up.  Expect colorful booths selling drinks and local food as well as offerings from our Caribbean neighbors.  Local music talent will perform every night culminating in July 4th parade and fireworks.  If you have not experienced parade and the Moko Jumbies on St John this is a great opportunity to do so.

Most Caribbean islands celebrate carnival and often connect it to another major holiday.  St John carnival coincides with US independence day  and perhaps more importantly Emancipation Day on July 3.  Emancipation in the Virgin Islands began in 1848.  A wonderful event to celebrate but that did not end the plight of the former slaves who were still forbidden to choose a plantation change more than once per year. If you want to know more about the history of St John please click the link below.  Emancipation Day program will be held at 1:00 PM in the park.
