Tortuga Cottage Deck and View

Welcome to Tortuga Cottage, the newest edition to Calabash Cottages. Tortuga is a cheerful and welcoming cottage with a gorgeous view of Coral Bay Harbor. This cottage has wonderful breezes, beautiful sunrises and moonrises, covered and uncovered decks plus a "hammock garden". There is a private hot tub overlooking the Caribbean sea For those who are familiar with Calabash Cottages, Tortuga Cottage is not in the same Calabash Boom location. The cottage is located just outside of Coral Bay. Although private, it is not as remote and secluded as Sago and Windwardside. On the other hand for our guests that have bemoaned the bumpy road, Tortuga could be your choice! This road is entirely paved and within walking distance of several bars and restaurants and shops.

View of Coral Bay Harbor from the deck

Sunny afternoons on our deck overlooking Coral Bay Harbor are delightful.
Enjoy the blue skies while still having the option to tuck into a the shade with a good book.

Dine on the deck and relax in the hot tub

The uncovered deck contains a full sized dining table, a top quality spa and our favorite chairs to put our feet up and enjoy the end of the day. Our hot tub is lovely in the evening but it is also a great place to enjoy sunrise with your morning coffee.

The interior of Tortuga Cottage

The kitchen of Tortuga Cottage

The interior of Tortuga Cottage consists of a breezy living room with comfortable seating areas and a beautiful ocean view. The full kitchen is well stocked with Allclad cookware, dishware for many moods and all of the utensils you will need to prepare meals at home. A separate dining area overlooks hammock garden and additional dining is provided on both the covered and uncovered decks. The cosy bedroom has a beautiful view of the Caribbean sea where you can choose between the cooling breezes and a ceiling fan or air conditioning.

Lovely interior dining area

Lovely interior dining area

Lovely interior dining area contains cushioned bench seating and three chairs.  The table is a rustic mahogany design. We provide an array of cloth napkins and place matts and a variety of dish ware. The four windows- one of which looks out to sea and three of which overlook the garden areas - make this a bright and cheerful room. Honestly, though, with two outdoor dining areas it gets used mostly on rainy days. Lighting is adjustable for romantic indoor dinners.

Living room

Queen bedroom

Queen sized bedroom overlooks a beautiful view of ocean. Wake up to gorgeous sunrises or pull the curtains if sleeping in is on your vacation agenda. Although the bedroom is outfitted with a ductless mini split air conditioner which cools the room in minutes it also is in the direct line of fire of our delightful tradewinds. if you would prefer to drift off to sleep under tropical breezes to the sounds of the tree frogs that is also an option. There is a ceiling fan over the bed which has a high quality mattress.

Our full bath shown below has a hammered copper sink, roomy shower and charming Italian tiles and island made mahogany cabinets.

Covered deck

Tortuga Cottage is accessed by a very inviting covered deck. It contains a dining table which we think is the perfect breakfast nook when it's too sunny to sit on the uncovered deck but too delightful to be indoors. There are also two chairs to enjoy some time reading or watching the birds in the garden. The covered deck opens onto a hammock garden that is shaded from midday onwards.

Guest Reviews for Tortuga Cottage

Tortuga Cottage is wonderful. All the comforts of home plus. We arrived to a beautiful garden patio where we had breakfast every morning. Gentle breezes flow through the spacious living room, bed room, dining room and kitchen. Spectacular deck with views of Coral Bay and oh those stars from the hot tub at night. Easy local food shopping and nearby restaurants. Multiple beaches, snorkleing and hiking are just a short ride away. Susan and her entire staff are the tops. This was our second stay at one of her properties and we will be back.

We just came back from a week at Tortuga Cottage overlooking Coral Bay April 22-29, 2018. The cottage was perfect mix of quaint, cozy, light, & breezy (no need for AC), beautiful wood and tile, comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces. The deck overlooking Coral Bay provided beautiful views of sunrise and bay activity. After a day of hiking and snorkeling it was fabulous to return to the cottage to cook (or dine at Aqua Bistro at the bottom of the hill) and then slide into the hot tub and gaze at the stars and smell the balmy ocean air. The kitchen had everything needed for those who like to cook. Breakfast out on the deck was the best way to start our day. Grilling on the front porch overlooking the beautiful garden was the perfect way to end the day. The bed & pillows were super comfy. Susan and staff were very helpful from initial inquiry to final checkout. Glad to see the island coming back nicely. The hiking trails were in great shape, and the beaches were beautiful. We visited multiple beaches and saw a wide variety of colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and some large fish like tarpon and barracuda. The cottage came with great beach umbrellas, beach chairs, beach towels & cooler which we used every day. We love St John and loved staying at Tortuga cottage!

Everything we hoped for and more!

My wife and I just returned from an unforgettable week on St. John. It was our first time on the island and everything exceeded our expectations, especially Tortuga Cottage. Susan and Paul's hillside cottage is so well kept and cozy we immediately felt comfortable in our new home. From the garden, to their decor, and their amazing patio we couldn't have been happier. They were quick to respond to anything we needed, and made it clear that if there was anything they could do to improve our stay they were willing and ready. We love not only the home itself, but also the location in Coral Bay. Great access to Salt Pond Bay, Haulover, and the North Shore beaches. Really enjoyed the laid back vibe in Coral Bay compared to the busier Cruz Bay. We would definitely recommend staying at Tortuga Cottage for your trip to St. John.

We would highly recommend this cottage! First, the location was great. Off the deck was a beautiful view of Coral Bay harbor. In the evenings we would watch the sail boats come and go while enjoying the breeze or sitting in the hot tub. Just down the hill is a very nice grocery story, Dolphin Market and very good restaurant, Aqua Bistro. Just down the road within a 10 minute drive is a wonderful place to snorkel, Salt Pond Bay. We saw manta rays, squids, turtles, baracudas and more. The house itself had everything we needed. Lots of cookware, folding beach chairs, beach towels etc. We lacked for nothing! Our greeter, Mary gave us all the tips we needed to navigate the sometimes challenging roads (stay to the left!) Our stay was everything we had hoped for! Thank you Calabash Cottages! Wonderful job!
